Dear friends,

Since a month I am working at a school in Shatila. This camp was originally set-up in 1949 for Palestinian refugees. It is located more South in Beirut and there are around 10.000 Palestinian refugees living here. However, due to the Syrian conflict the camp is now also home to Syrian refugees. Increasing the population to an estimated number 10.000-22.000.

A few weeks ago I received a lot of support from my friends and a lot of people showed interest in what I am doing there. On Wednesday morning I am teaching English to 6-year olds, they are a mix of Palestinian and Syrians. I am very proud of my kids welcoming me every wednesday with an English song we practiced since I started. We have also worked on counting, which for most of them is easy till 10 but till 20 remains difficult. The difficulty of teaching here is that the level is mixed, some children understand a basic 'how are you' while others are on a whole different level. But with a lot of patient, time and individual attention these kids have the potential to learn a lot. Another aspect that makes it difficult is the time, because there are too many children and not enough space we work in shifts. This means that a class is only 45 minutes, which is very short to teach them properly.

Here is why I started this fundraising. The school is underfunded, and there is a lack of teaching material. I got this idea by one of my friends who wanted to get more involved in my volunteerjob. This first donation is the start of this project, shortly after more friends showed their interest to get involved. Which leads to this point and start of this project. From the money I would like to buy some whiteboards (the one there is now is falling apart), ventilators (because the children are distracted by the heat), notebooks, pens and other essential materials. I will post a weekly update on the teaching progress and will keep you guys up to date!

Please feel free to aks me any questions! If you want to support this project please donate on NL66RABO0161071635 .

Many thanks!
